How To Buy Oil Paintings

I have.a custom made oil painting displayed in my living room. I gaze upon it each day. Its a portrait of a woman during sunset and half turned. Every single day I look at it and I am amazed as to what she might be thinking, sometimes I feel as though the painting has changed somehow. It gives new meaning every time I see it. Every person who has looked at it had a different interpretation of what the Painting suggested. It sparks the imagination. It triggers your emotion and makes you think. Such is the power of those glossy portraits created by the brilliant artists.

Why open up a retail store?

February 22, 2012

Retailing is growing and growing fast. As one of the nation’s largest sectors, the retail industry provides a wealth of opportunity to people who have the desire to forge their own path to success. One-third of the 500,000 or so new businesses created each year are retail businesses. The entrepreneurs risk their hard earned capital, dedicate their resources and make a life out of offering consumers something they need or want.

The possibilities and opportunities that are associated with opening a retail business make it the backbone of the American economy. The industry delivers a rewarding business for the more than 24 million people who earn their livelihood by selling products. Retailers distribute the goods and services that are consumed by the public each and every day – be it food, energy, leisure, and our home products – our lives would not be the same without having places to get these items and resources.

Most of these retailers buy merchandise from a manufacturer or wholesaler and sell it to consumers for their usage. The price that is charged for the goods covers the retailer’s expenses and typically includes a spread that is considered the gross profit. The retail portion of the U.S. economy accounts for about 38 percent of our gross national product–more than $3 trillion dollars. The National Retail Federation is quoted in saying that more than 1 million retailing companies operate more than 1.4 million retail businesses in the US alone.

Types of Retailers

To provide detail into the types of retail businesses, we’ll take a look at the different ways for which a retail business can market products to the consumer. Remember that all these businesses began as a simple concept and grew through word of mouth and due to the drive of their respective store owners.
Our country is an amazing conglomerate of independent stores, large national department stores, discount chains, convenience stores, membership clubs, national and regional chains, category-killer stores, and other large-scale retail operations.

Store retailers hope that their fixed locations attract a large volume of walk-in customers.of the street. These new customers will be satisfied with their purchase and will spread positive word of mouth about the business to their friends and family. Most stores have varied merchandise display options and utilize advertising both in print and via the internet to attract customers.

Store retailers sell products to the general public for personal use, but some also serve commercial businesses as well. These include establishments such as office supply operations, computer and technology service stores, and home improvement stores.

Massive retailers like Wal-Mart are focused on selling consumable products that consumers need for their everyday lives while more specialty retailers such as “Sunglass Hut” tend to sell products that people desire. They focus more on unique products that meet the emotional needs of the customer and focus on creating a brand mystique that is associated when someone interacts with the business. The ability to integrate an eCommerce business within the overall retail operation makes it even that much more powerful.

A retail business can be a fantastic way to start a new venture. Consider your location and products wisely, strive to provide great customer service, and manage your expenses carefully and you will soon be on your way to having a sustainable retail business.

A Closer Look At Fine Collectibles

February 22, 2012

W.en looking for a fine quality gift it is sometimes good to know a little of the history of the company; particularly when you are looking at collectibles.

Collectibles are a wonderful gift especially during the holiday season as many fine collectible companies have gifts that are designed for the season.
One of the oldest and most popular fine collectible companies is M.I. Hummel. Hummel figurines are created in Germany by master artists of W. Goebel Porzellanfabrik and based upon the creative and artistic vision of Sister Marie Innocentia Hummel who lived and worked in Germany during the first half of the 1900s.

Hummel figurines are world renowned and appreciated for the simple beauty and subtle humor which people have enjoyed for almost a century. I know my mother and my grandmother both have many Hummel figurines, some dating back to the early 1940s.

Admirers of Hummel figurines refer to them simply as Hummels. Each Hummel is painstakingly hand sculpted and then painted by hand to flawless detail. They make a fine gift and can be seen at AffordableQualityGifts.
Another of the older established fine collectible companies is Swarovski Crystal.
Swarovski Crystal has been making the absolute best precision cut crystal for over a hundred years. Swarovski Crystal, family owned company based in Austria is known worldwide for the innovation and sophistication they bring to the art form, as well as the highest standards of artistic expression.

One of the advantages of giving a gift like a Hummel or a piece of fine crystal is that it eliminates the possibility that someone else may give the same gift. There are so many different collectibles available, and in the case of the Hummel even those that are of the same theme will be slightly different because they are hand made.

Hummels and Swarovski Crystal make excellent gifts that will make the recipient feel like you really care.

Data-Recovery: What You Need

February 22, 2012

Data recovery is something we hope that we will never need. Whether you simply make the mistake of deleting important software or you lose it all in a computer crash, that valuable asset of information may seem like it is lost forever. But, if you have complete and quality data-recovery software on your computer or through your system, you can be confident that it has a backup and it is there even though these things will happen to you. This can be so important when it comes to safeguarding your business or your personal information.

What people do not realize is that there are a number of ways that things can go wrong on their computers. Whether you are responsible for the computers of a large corporation, a small business or even just your own personal computer, having a way to restore information when things go wrong is quite important. Here are some things that could happen to you, well, anytime, even right now. Your computer could be running slowly or be loaded with powerful spyware that can destroy files, transmit personal data or, even worse, cause the computer to crash. All of a sudden, its gone. Or, you could be working along nicely without a care in the world and bam! A power surge, an electric storm or something else electrical happens and its all gone.

There are many more ways in which you can lose all of the personal data that is stored on your computer. You dont even have to have the programs running to lose it. Nevertheless, many people mistakenly believe this will not happen to them and therefore do not do anything to prevent this total loss. Data recovery is necessary for this not to happen. The strange thing is, it takes only minutes to install and use and it virtually and it takes care of itself. It is not overly costly either. So, why dont more people use data recovery? They just dont realize its importance. And that is one mistake we dont want to make. Data recovery is a need all computer users have.

ATMs – How Does The Retailer Decide?

February 22, 2012

ATMs or Automated Teller Machines, are an essential part of modern life.

In many families both the adults work, making it impossible to reach the bank to withdraw cash. ATMs do make this possible.

ATMs are of two basic types, hole in the wall machines set into a reinforced bunker, and retailer cash machines, standing in shops and other premises. Retailer cash machines may be front or rear-loading.

Why are there so many ATMs? Retailers want one in their premises. ATMs attract customers and over half of the money withdrawn from a retailer ATM is spent on the premises. There are some costs involved, with the retailer paying for phone line costs and power consumption of the ATM, so there has to be substantial benefits for so many retailers to be clamoring for an ATM.

Retailers have several choices. They can choose which bank network the ATM is connected, though the ATM will process transactions from customers of all banks.

The retailer can also choose to load the ATM with their own cash takings, saving bank charges and loading charges from Cash in Transit companies. This depends on the retailer having sufficient high quality notes to load the ATM once or twice each week, few people want to be doing this on a daily basis because it must be done with the premises in a secure condition and out of opening hours.

As an alternative to loading their own cash, retailers are increasingly asking the ATM providers to organize cash loading. A security company will survey the site, talk to the retailer about what is required in terms of security procedures, and assume responsibility for loading the machine. The security company may require a secure room, like an office, where the can work on the cash cassettes.

Retailers have a choice between front and rear loading machines. Rear loaders have to be accessible from front and rear, so are usually inserted in a solid wall, with an office or store room at the rear. The safe opens at the rear and they are loaded from the rear, so the store can stay open while the ATM is being loaded. Rear loaders are much more secure, from a cash loading perspective.

Front loading ATMs take up less space, but the security procedures when the ATM is being loaded are more intrusive. Some security companies will insist on shutters being down and the shop empty while the Cash in Transit crew are on the premises. Other companies will only insist on this while the ATM safe is only actually open.

The retailer must balance the inconvenience of locking the store while the security company are working, against the alternative inconvenience and security concerns of doing the job themselves before or after normal opening hours.

Night Hiking And Other Backpacking Ideas

February 22, 2012

What do you do when you need to be home instead of backpacking? Dream up new ways to backpack and new ideas for backpacking gear. Here are some of my most recent backpacking ideas for products and techniques.

New Backpacking Ideas – Products

Swamp cooler t-shirt. This is for hot desert hiking. Just soaking your shirt in a stream and wearing it wet is a great way to keep cool from the evaporative effect, but twenty minutes later you are far from the stream and the shirt is dry. The idea here, then, is a shirt that has water bags attached. Once filled, they slowly leak the water into the fabric of the shirt, keeping you cool for hours.

Solid fuel fire starter sticks. Add a strike-anywhere match head to army fuel sticks and you have an instant fire starter. It would be something like a mini emergency flare.

Rain cape tarp. Not of a poncho, but a tarp that has a chin strap and a few velcro attachments down one side. It would be cheaper and simpler to manufacture, and easier to actually use as a tarp. It would also easily cover you and your backpack. If you have ever held a rectangular tarp around you and over your head to keep the rain off, you get the idea.

Disposable water container. The idea here is to have a water container for those long hikes in the desert when you need to carry extra water. When you have used it up, the container, which is made of wax paper, doubles as a good fire starter, eliminating its weight from your pack. Existing waxed milk and orange juice cartons could be used for this.

Backpacking Ideas – Techniques

Create body heat. You can carry less cold weather wear and sleeping gear if you have more body heat. To create more, eat fats before going to sleep. Fats create heat when they are digested (this is why eating whale blubber helps Eskimos stay warm). Corn chips are oily enough to help if you can’t stomach a half cup of olive oil before bedtime.

Air conditioning your tent. On hot and dry days, try wetting any large piece of cloth in the nearest stream and laying it over the roof of your tent. The evaporative cooling can lower the interior temperature of the tent by ten degrees. If you are using a shirt or other clothing that you’ll be needing, allow enough time before dark for it to dry completely.

Night hiking. I purposely planned a five-day backpacking trip in the Sierra Nevadas to coincide with the full moon. Each night I slept until the cold bothered me, then easily hiked through the rest of the night by moonlight. It got to carry a lighter sleeping bag, and it was a unique experience – one of those backpacking ideas I had wanted to try for a while. However, it did mean taking a leisurely nap in the sun every afternoon.

Five Tips to Finding the Best Home Based Business Opportunity

February 21, 2012

Who wouldn’t rather work from home? In today’s workforce, the wealthy are getting richer, those with the least resources are getting poorer, and the middle is being squeezed out. With gas prices gouging consumers, commutes to and from work are costing more than ever before, meaning less discretionary income when payday rolls around. And, as companies continue to tighten their belts and downsize, workers are taking on increased responsibilities for the same amount of money. What’s the result??? Working longer hours with less to show for it.

Arachnophobia And Other Fears

February 21, 2012

We had a little excitement this morning at home. My wife came out of the bathroom and said, quite calmly, Ed, theres a big black spider in the bathtub. Since I was watching my daughter, Ella, at the time, I carried her in there to investigate. I was a bit surprised that my wife did not call it a Brown Recluse. Thats our running joke. She grew up in Brown Recluse territory, and so whenever she sees a brownish spider she says Ed, I just saw a Brown Recluse. Go get it. I gently remind her that the Brown Recluse does not live in Northern California as I gather up the culprit and take it outside.

When Ella and I looked in the tub, I could understand why Melissa had not called it a Brown Recluse. This spider was a deep shiny black. Im usually pretty casual about spiders, knowing that the only dangerous spider in our area is the black widow, a spider I had never before seen. But the color of this one caused me to act with a bit more caution. And it was good that I did. When I gathered up the critter in a Tupperware bowl, I could see, through the translucent plastic, a distinctive red hourglass on the belly. Here was my first Black Widow.

Needless to say, my wife did not share in my scientific enthusiasm at this discovery. She promptly took Ella from my arms and commanded me to take the spider far away from the house. I was gratified and a bit surprised that she did not encourage me to immediately squash it.

Now I want to pause here and put in a bit of a plug for spiders. They get a bad rap. They take the blame for a lot of stuff they dont do: flea bites, tick bites, bed bug bites, even mosquito bites. You name it, spiders take the blame for it. Most spiders dont bite humans, others only bite when confronted, and of those that do bite, there are only a handful that are truly dangerous to humans. Even the bite of the supposedly deadly Black Widow is fatal in less than 1% of all instances.

And then there are the legends that have grown up around the infamous Brown Recluse. Over 60% of the medically diagnosed Brown Recluse bites occur in regions in which the spider does not live! How a spider that lives only in the South Central portion of the USA can be responsible for so many unexplained ailments here in California and elsewhere is beyond me.

Heres a brief excerpt from a spider info site to give you some perspective:

A recent summary of reported spider bites in the United States between 1989 and 1993 included fewer than 5,000 incidents per year. These numbers seem small when compared to the over 800,000 dog bites that required stitches each year. During the study period, dog bites were responsible for 20 deaths per year, and auto-deer collisions were associated with 130 annual deaths. You might be surprised to learn that there were no spider-bite related fatalities during that four-year period.

At this point, you may be wondering what this has to do with life coaching. Fear not, I do have a point Im getting to. And as the good Dr. Seuss would say, This may not seem important I know. But it is, and thats why Im bothering telling you so.

How do you feel about spiders? Do you cringe when you see one walking on your wall? Do you quiver at the thought of one crawling up your leg? Where do those feelings come from? When you were a youngster, did someone in your family go into paroxysms of fear whenever a spider was spotted? Did you inherit that fear? And does that fear continue to control your relationship with these critters?

Ok, lets face it, a fear of spiders is not going to prevent you from living a successful, abundant, joyous life. But heres the catch: What fears do you harbor that DO prevent you from living that life? What other fears have you inherited from your family and friends and the culture around you? And how do those fears keep from becoming the person you have the potential to be?

Because our fears are almost always founded in the past, they appear much larger than they really are. When we experience a fear in the present, were really reacting to the projection of a deep-rooted belief that was planted inside us long ago. Just as the shadow of a spider walking in front of a light appears huge and frightening, so too do our fears become magnified many times when we look at the projection. The reality of the spider, when viewed from a place of present-time awareness, is much less scary. So too do your fears become manageable when you shift your perception from the shadow to the source.

Fears thrive on the lies and exaggerations that are possible only in the dark, hidden places. As soon as you bring those fears out into the light you can begin to see them for what they really are. The trick, of course, is knowing how to pull those fears out into the light.

So heres your assignment:

When you see a spider (or a snake or a mouse or you look down from a balcony or get onto a plane or fill in the blank) and you notice the dread that lives in the pit of your stomach, know that you have a great opportunity to practice shifting your perception. So the next time you find yourself face to face with a spider, rather than running away or calling for reinforcements, try to stop and breathe for a moment and become an explorer of your inner world. If you need to catch the spider and place it in a hermetically sealed container in order to breathe, thats ok! And then see if you can observe that spider with the objectivity of a scientist.

This practice will serve you well the next time you find yourself confronted by a fear that really does hold you back from the life you want to live. When you feel yourself quaking as you prepare to give a presentation, when you watch your arms quivering as you walk into a job interview, when your mouth becomes drier than the Sahara desert as you share your portfolio with a gallery owner, whenever you notice yourself entering a place of fear, become a scientist, objectively exploring the phenomenon. Become a neutral observer of your own life. When you discover the source of your fear, you may be surprised to find that the reality is much less scary than the perception.

Oh, and when youre done exploring those other fears, remember to say thank you to your new spider friends.

How Can SAMe Supplements Benefit Me?

February 21, 2012

What is SAMe?
SAMe (S-adenosylmethionine) is a naturally occurring compound found in all human tissue and organs. It is a “building block” necessary for the production of many compounds produced by your body, and is used in over 35 different biochemical reactions. SAMe actually donates a part of itself to form these new compounds through a process called methylation or transmethylation. SAME is one of the few dietary supplements on the market today that combines the benefits of several nutrients into one, because the body uses the substances produced from SAMe for numerous bodily reactions and processes.

SAMe is a supplement formed in the body by an enzymatic reaction between adenosine-triphosphate (ATP) and methionine. It was discovered in 1952 in Italy and has been researched and manufactured there. SAMe works closely with folic acid and vitamin B-12 and functions as a methyl donor. This nutrient carries and donates methyl molecules necessary to facilitate the manufacture of DNA and brain neurotransmitters.* Tissue levels of SAMe are typically low in the elderly.

How can SAMe help me?
SAMe might be an effective treatment for depression, with fewer side effects than antidepressant drugs. But the real benefits and risks of SAMe are still unclear. In theory, it may increase the risk of heart disease. People with depression or joint pain should seek medical advice before trying SAMe. Supplementation with SAM-e increases levels of serotonin, dopamine and phosphatides, and improves serotonin and dopamine receptor site binding. Some research has shown that SAM-e provides relief from arthritis pain, without the stomach irritation caused by aspirin and similar drugs.

Are there any side effects associated with SAMe supplementation?
SAMe is a very safe dietary supplement. Minor side effects include nausea and gastrointestinal irritation, due to its sulfur content. These were only noted at very high doses (1200-1600mg) and symptoms diminished with continued use. Persons suffering from manic depression (bipolar disorder) should not take SAMe without prior consultation with their physician. If you experience any of the symptoms above for an extended period of time, you may be allergic to SAMe, or it may not be the right supplement for you.

Bowling Tips That Everyone Can Benefit From

February 21, 2012

Of all bowling tips I can share with you, the most important bowling tip of all is: practice! No matter how well you understand the game, no matter how excellent your bowling equipment is, you just are not going to get any better if you do not practice, practice, practice.

Another great bowling tip is to get a coach. It is best to get a trained coach, somebody who has helped others on their road to bowling greatness. Unfortunately, getting such a coach can cost a pretty penny… if you can find one in the first place.

So, if you cannot find somebody trained as a coach, find the next best thing – your mom, dad, friend, or neighbor, etc. Of course, you do, indeed, want someone who is a great bowler. At the very least, you want someone who is very interested in bowling – think of it this way, not all basketball referees are excellent basketball players, but they know what is going on the game.

In other words, even if friend cannot roll a strike every time, he or she can still help dissect your movements. Your friend may still be able to tell you what is wrong. Also, perhaps you know what you are doing wrong, and you end up overcorrecting yourself – your coach (even if it is just a friend) is going to be able to tell you that you have overcorrected or to tell you other information that you just cannot see or feel for yourself.

Besides these two major bowling tips – practice and don’t go at it alone – there are tons of bowling tips to adhere to. Very few bowling tips apply to all bowlers like these first two do. Someone who always gets a gutter balls is going to need different bowling tips that someone who cannot time his or her approach. Similarly, an amateur bowler is going to be helped by completely different bowling tips than a professional.

Nonetheless, here are a few more bowling tips:

· Stop using the house balls at the bowling alley – get yourself a custom bowling ball, or at least a bowling ball that fits your hand well. You are going to be able to use a different weight ball than you normally would, simply because it fits your hand better. Why not go heavier?

· Get your own bowling shoes – while this bowling tip is not quite as important as the abovementioned one, it can still help. Most certainly, you are going to feel better when you are wearing your own bowling shoes.

· When you have a question, ask it – never assume that you have learned all there is to know. Even the best bowlers, the professionals, can stand to take some advice. Never stop learning.

· Stretch – no, bowling is not a contact sport, but that most certainly does not mean that bowlers do not get injured. Stretching can help you prevent injuries. Also, making sure that you have a ball that properly fits will keep you safer, too. You may also decide to wear a wrist support.

· Keep that throwing are nice and loose.

· Think – bowling is not all in the wrist, it is in the head. Really think about your movements and y our delivery. Concentrate on which movements create which spins on the ball, etc.

· Finish close to the foul line – being with six inches of the foul line will help insure that you get the best release possible (of course, you never want to cross it!)

· Watch the professionals – watch them on TV, or watch some great bowlers at your local alley.

· Always keep your eye on the target – this does not necessarily mean you need to keep your eyes on the pins! Rather, look at the markers in the lane.

· Follow through!

I hope that these bowling tips have helped you. And I want to remind you of one of the absolute most important bowling tips of all – have fun! It is not worth bowling if you are no longer having fun. Do not let the pressure to win get in the way of your overall aim to have fun!

Overnight Summer Camp – Sign Up A Year In Advance And Other Great Tips

February 21, 2012

There are overnight summer camps that are co-ed camps, boy’s camps, girl’s camps or brother-sister camps where boys and girls may have separate venues and activities. Basically, if you can think of any subject of interest, there’s probably a camp that specializes in it. Many kid campers are enrolled in summer camp by their parents early in the year, thus camps fill up quickly.

Camps are divided by gender – girls only, boys only, or co-ed and again by age group. An overnight summer camp is a supervised program for children and teens conducted during the summer months in most countries; children and teens, called campers, who attend camp, participate in a variety of activities, many of which are special interest. The variety of camps available today is almost innumerable, meaning there will be some specialized camps that may have availability left even into the summer.

Selecting the right camp that fits into your child or teen’s interests, special interests, needs, special needs and abilities will be one of the first steps Beyond the traditional sports – baseball, softball, basketball, soccer, tennis, football, and more – there are camps for outdoor enthusiasts that can offer horseback riding, hiking, camping, fishing, and even rapelling. Some camps have a targeted focus like religious study, academics, and competitive sports.

Consider these industry-recommended guidelines – for smaller children ages 7 and 8, there should be one counselor for every six campers; by age 15, there should be one counselor for every 10 campers. Children will get more individual attention and supervision with a lower number of campers per counselor. Although camp counselor jobs don’t usually pay very well, usually minimum wage or less, counselors receive free room and board; many take the job primarily for the camping experience.

There are many types of overnight summer camps with a focus on education that cater to students with differing ages and academic interests. Specialty overnight camps can range from $500 to $1000 per week depending on the program. Camp tuition can be expensive; similar to travel insurance, there are now insurance policies for families sending their children to overnight summer camp to cover last minute cancellations, homesickness, medical emergencies and emergency evacuations.

The reputation of an overnight summer camp can also be determined by asking what percentage of counselors returned from the previous year. Check the camper-counselor ratio to determine the number of campers for each counselor. Do you think, if you have more than one child, they would they benefit from attending the same summer camp together?

Weight loss camps are for children and teens in order to help them learn about how to lose weight and how to keep it off while having a great overnight summer camp experience. Non-profit camps often range from $1200 to $3000 for four weeks and $2500 to $5000 for eight weeks. Children or teens could typically explore subjects new to them like marine science, photography, creative writing, community service, drama, magic, scuba diving, video production, comic book design, crime scene forensics, cooking, yoga, rappelling, etc.

Homesickness is a frequent problem, but with a caring camp counselor most campers adjust easily. You want to ensure your child’s safety and comfort, so try to talk to current campers at the selected camps and their parents, if possible. If you spend the time needed to research your options and include your child in all the decisions, he or she will most likely have a memorable experience that provides opportunities to grow while having a lot of fun and making new friends. Choosing a camp close to home will save a lot of money on airfare and possible hotel or motel overnight stays for a parent, or other transportation costs; this is especially true if your child might get a case of homesickness and want to come home early from the overnight summer camp.

Marketing Tip – The Top 6 Biggest Marketing Mistakes

February 21, 2012

When I started to write this article on the biggest mistake almost every marketer makes I was going to focus on THE BIGGEST single mistake, but there are several. And, an even bigger aha moment is that most companies that “call themselves” professional marketing companies make the mistakes as bad, if not worse, than the non-professionals trying to build their own business.`

Mistake #1 – Assuming that Marketing Results are Vague, Black Magic, and Not Predictable Marketing tip –Marketing done correctly will provide consistent, predictable results

As a guideline, the national average for direct mail marketing is 0.5% to 1.0%, meaning that if you send out 1,000 letters, postcards, flyers, etc. And IF you are even average, then you should have between 5 and 10 people contacting you.

Although that is considered average, doing some simple things can take that number up to 10%-30%, or even higher.

Mistake #2 – Trying Marketing One Time and Giving Up….Because That Didn’t Work. Marketing Tip –Marketing Results, or Leads are one of the critical results of a business that are ABSOLUTELY necessary.

In other words you can’t survive without delivering the number of leads needed to survive, nor will you ever super succeed without delivering the exact number of leads needed for that level either. Therefore, when someone tells me that they

  • Tried marketing once
  • Tried direct mail once
  • Tried a newspaper ad once
  • Or any other approach in marketing

and walked away because it didn’t work (that’s their opinion, not a reality) then I’m looking at a company that will fail soon, or at least not far down the road. Some move on to things that cost less in dollars and cents, but cost more in time, and the results delivered is almost nil. Delivering consistent marketing results, and in the right amount is not a choice. Do it or close your doors! Marketing Tip — Marketing results, or leads, are dependent on two things

  • How many people see our marketing materials
  • The percentage of those that see our materials who actually are COMPELLED to give us a call, signup, or touch base with us in some way.

It looks like this: If I need 10 people to call me this week, and if I know that for every person who sees my marketing 1% will call me then I only have to touch 1,000 people with my marketing. Now does that sound hard? Of course it isn’t…if you are reaching out to over 1,000 people every week. (# exposed to marketing materials) X (response rate) = # leads .

The problem is that in the hundreds of seminars I’ve done, most people miss that point totally. They report that they sent out 100 letters and only got 1 reply, so, in their opinion, it didn’t work because they didn’t get the 10 they needed. They missed the whole concept.

Mistake #3 – Not knowing your response rate Marketing Tip – Always know your marketing response rate, or be finding it.

So, when you send out marketing and have no clue of what your response rate is, then how in the world do you know how much to send?

Well, I’d send out enough to hit the 0.5% as a test market, and then measure the actual results coming back to be used in the next mailer.

Mistake #4 – Not knowing when your marketing isn’t working?

Mistake #4A – Not sending out marketing because it is perceived that it “costs too much.”

Mistake #4B – Not knowing what it requires to acquire a customer? These are sort of one in the same mistakes -

  • Not knowing when your marketing isn’t working, and
  • How to measure when it does work.
  • And the answer to both is “what does it cost to acquire a client.”

How would you define “not working?” There is only one time when your marketing could be defined as “not working” and that is when it costs too much to acquire a customer. Notice, I didn’t say what marketing cost. I said what it costs to acquire a customer. Most decisions to not send marketing this month are based on “fear of spending money” when the decision should be made on “for every dollar spent on marketing it will generate X times more dollars” and then we MUST know what X is. If X is larger than an acceptable figure we move forward no matter what the cost because it will always generate more money than we put in. Let’s look at it this way, if you could generate 15% every year in the stock market would you do it? Of course….most would anyway. I wouldn’t because I believe that for every dollar put into my business I see 10-100 times come out and so I’m always looking for where to invest my money for the greatest return. And if you start managing your business that way instead of where to “avoid spending” you’ll find the answer and see similar results. So what does it cost you to acquire a client?

That usually is a result of not knowing what it costs to acquire a lead or acquire a customer, or what the response rate is for your marketing.

Let’s say that a mailer costs you $0.35 (for a postcard, printed and mailed, using http://www.usps.com/ ). If you send 1,000 pieces, that is $350, and if you get 1%, or 10 calls, that lead cost you only $35.00 each….right? Not bad if you ask me.

Now that is a lead, not a sale. So, let’s say that you close 40-50% of your sales, which I also consider a reasonable figure. That means that it costs you $70.00 to acquire a customer. If that is a reasonable figure for you, then your statement of “I can’t afford to send marketing this month” is nothing but a ‘business killer.” It really should be changed to “how many customers do I want to buy this month” and then adjust the number of letters going out to deliver that result.

If your sale is small enough that $70 will not work, then we’ve got to work on that we can. The point is you can’t afford to not make this work. We just have to find the results that will work for you.

Marketing tip – Have a clear cost to acquire a customer, and knowing what is acceptable.

Mistake #5 – Marketing that talks about you, your product, your features. Most companies look at marketing as a black hole, or black magic that they have no control over. That is only their perception….in which case they’ve made it reality….at least for them.

You are going to get a golden niblet here. This is a huge mistake that businesses make, and this is the one that relegates them to the “less than nothing” response rates in their marketing. Learn that this isn’t about you, it isn’t about your product, it isn’t about the features of your product, or even what you do….it is only about one thing….”what your prospect wants and needs, or a solution to his greatest problem.”

I know….I know…I hear the grumbling now….You say your product does all of that. The customer doesn’t know that, so don’t open your marketing with anything about you, your product, your features, or what you do. The first thing at the very top of your marketing should

Get Your Prospect’s Attention by making a value statement about what kind of results the prospect could get, or will get, or you will guarantee that he will get, or that a previous customer has gotten. Make it in dollars and cents.

Your response rate will jump up to over 5% to 10%. If you’ve been getting 0.5% to 1.0% (the national average) then this is a 10 to 20 times increase in the number of people walking through your door for a relatively simple change. If you’ve not even been hitting the 0.5% area, then it is how much bigger than where you are now….pretty darned big. I’ve seen customers increase their business results by over 10 times in a week by getting this right.

Marketing Tip-Marketing is ALWAYS about the customer, his wants and needs, and his pain or solution. Not about you, your product, features, or what you do.

Mistake #6 – Hiring a Professional Marketing Company That Won’t or Can’t Define Their Measurable Results When you hire anyone for anything, always ask for measurable results as a guideline. If you noticed in mistake #5 above, I suggested that you state your value in dollars and cents to the customer. After all, he will ultimately make a decision on hiring you or someone else based on the value you bring to the table. When you allow the customer to figure out what you are worth it isn’t likely to be anything near what you are actually worth. So, why shouldn’t you expect your marketing provider to provide you the measurements you need to make your decision?

Also, when a vendor is aware that that is what they are responsible for delivering they will also start managing it for better and better results. It just seems to happen that way.

So, IF you decide to hire out your marketing then ask one key question:

What measurable results do you, as my professional marketing company, typically deliver?

It should be a response rate, in other words a statement like “approximately 1% to 5% of the marketing sent out should call you” or what other action you want. And keep in mind that 1% is considered average and for a really good marketing company it should be a LOT higher.

Now, here comes the surprise, and something that will save you a LOT of money.

If they won’t give you a number…and MOST won’t…..what do you think that means?

  • They don’t know – which means that that wasn’t on their radar screen, that isn’t something they are managing, and that WAS the reason you wanted to hire them…right? People manage what is important to them. They are managing their sales numbers, not the results they provide for you….get the idea?
  • They don’t want you to know what their results are -no further comments needed here?

Most will sidestep the question by stating things like:

  • Everyone is different…therefore, I can’t answer that.
  • You are different….so we’ll have to find what works for you.

All are avoiding the real question….”What has been typical for their clients before?” You are buying results, so don’t get sucked into “beautiful graphics” or “fantastic copy” or “our clients are …..and …..”. when in reality, the only thing that counts are the results they have provided, the number of clients, response rates, dollars paid for dollars generated by their marketing. Do NOT allow them to take you away from measurable RESULTS…anything else is just activity that may or may not be delivering any results. They state results or walk. Marketing Tip – When you hire marketing companies they WILL state measurable results that can be backed up by talking to their customers or you WALK.

Low Budget Filmmakers Must Do Everything Required

February 21, 2012

So you say you have a burning desire to make a movie and you will do what ever it takes to get the job done? You fancy yourself and independent type and you want to reflect that in your art? Well, you better know what it takes before you decide to launch yourself into the world of independent filmmaking. If you do not know, your project may never see the light of day, or more importantly the light of a movie screen.

Making a low budget or independent film is a double edged sword. On the one side you have the freedom to express your art without corporate considerations, but on the other side you have the daunting task of doing almost every job yourself. From writing, producing, directing, and acting to providing travel arrangements, applying make-up, and fixing broken equipment, you cover the broad spectrum of chores and responsibilities. And that does not even cover the other responsibilities such as providing meals for everyone, rehearsals, etc All you have to do is look at the long list of credits at the end of any movie in the theaters and you can see how much work it takes to make a motion picture.

While in the midst of making my last film Mike And The Magic Lamp I almost started to doubt whether I would ever finish it. I had been working on this movie for about two years straight doing every aspect of the film myself when I suddenly started to run out of energy. The continuous filming that I was doing combined with a heavy work schedule at my real job (Stage Manager of TV shows in Hollywood) was starting to get to me. I would have to prepare everything before a film shoot, and then do just about everything during the film shoots. Once in a while I would have a loyal friend help me with the awesome responsibilities of carrying equipment, setting it up, and then tearing everything down and putting it away each day, but you can only ask them to do so much if you are not paying them.

At one point during the filming of M&TML I passed out, fell off my directors chair and hit my head on the corner of the set. I was mentally and physically exhausted while only halfway through the filmmaking process. The problem was that I was not yet creatively exhausted. The burning desire to make a movie and enter it in all the major film festivals was still alive, but the vessel (my body) that allows me to create was in need of a little R&R. I would take a day off here and there but it was always hard to rest when you have that little creative voice in your head bugging you to get your film finished so the world can enjoy your art. I was very lucky that I only suffered a minor head injury from that accident.

I finally finished the film Mike And The Magic Lamp after four long years of endless work that nearly put me in the hospital from exhaustion. The film went on to win the Silver Award at the Houston Worldfest in 1998 along with several other awards that year at major film festivals like the Santa Clarita International Film Festival. That film gave me recognition as an Independent Filmmaker and inspired me to pursue the path of making films on my own terms.

I pushed myself to the limits mentally and physically to get my movies made in the beginning of my career and it was just the springboard that I needed to get launched into the world of independent filmmaking. I may have doubted my bodys ability to keep up with my creative drive, but I some how managed to strike an agreement between the two and get my films finished. Before you take on the daunting task of making a movie almost completely by yourself, you have to ask yourself one thing; AM I REALLY COMMITTED to this idea? If you are not, then I suggest you find another outlet for your creativity. If you are committed, then pursue it with everything you have inside, but make sure you realize that your creative drive cares nothing about your health.

Tennis Rackets – A Selection Guide

February 21, 2012

The single most important piece of equipment a tennis player will purchase is a tennis racket. With the wide variety of tennis racket brands, models, types, and specifications on the market, selecting a tennis racket can be a daunting task. Prospective tennis racket buyers should consider several important criteria. These criteria are brand, racket weight, racket length, grip size, balance, and head size.

Many tennis racket manufacturers produce multiple racket models with varying specifications. Popular brand name tennis rackets include Avery, Babolat, Dunlop, Fischer, Gamma, Head, Prince, ProKennex, Volkl, Wilson, and Yonex. Each racket manufacturer has its own unique characteristics and nuances that pervade their entire tennis racket line. You can consult your local tennis professional or tennis racket expert for advice on the brand of racket that is most likely to fit your needs. Ultimately, however, testing out different brands of tennis rackets is the best way to find the right match.

Weight is another important consideration when selecting a tennis racket. Most tennis rackets weigh between 8.5 and 12.5 ounces. In general, lighter rackets are easier to swing and players that lack strength (e.g., older players, children) will be able to swing lighter rackets faster, generating more power. The overall effect of tennis racket weight is somewhat ambiguous, however, as heavier rackets, while more difficult to swing, are more stable and transfer more force to the ball upon impact. Thus, when choosing a weight, comfort is the most important consideration. Typically, players that are more skilled prefer the stability and control offered by heavier rackets.

While the length of tennis rackets is fairly standard, many manufacturers have begun to offer longer rackets in recent years. The standard tennis racket length is 27 inches. While the rules of tennis allow rackets to measure up to 32 inches, most tennis rackets measure from 27 to 28 inches. The benefits of increased tennis racket length are increased reach and increased power. Longer tennis rackets can provide more power because the arc the racket travels during the swing is longer (especially on the serve). Players that are more skilled generally prefer the maneuverability of standard length rackets.

Because the grip is the tennis player’s link between the tennis racket and his or her body, grip comfort is of supreme importance. Tennis racket grips typically range from 4 inches to 4 7/8 inches in circumference. Most adult tennis players use grips between 4 1/4 inches and 4 5/8 inches. The easiest way to determine your grip size is to grip a tennis racket and place the index finger of your other hand in the space between your fingers and thumb/palm. If your index finger fits comfortably, the grip size is correct. If your index finger does not fit, the grip size is too small. If there is a large amount of space around your index finger, the grip size is too big. Selecting the proper grip size on your tennis racket is important not only for comfort and for performance, but also for injury prevention. Using a tennis racket with a grip that is too large or too small can lead to arm injuries.

Tennis rackets are also classified by the balance point or how the weight is distributed in relation to the head of the racket. The two balance classifications of tennis rackets are head heavy and head light. Head-heavy rackets provide more power because they place more of the tennis racket’s weight behind the ball on impact. Head-light rackets, on the other hand, provide more control because they are easier to swing and maneuver and absorb more of the ball’s energy on impact.

One final consideration when selecting a tennis racket is head size. Typically, tennis racket heads range in size from 85 to 135 square inches. In general, tennis rackets with larger heads provide more power while tennis rackets with smaller heads provide more control. Players that are more skilled generally prefer the control and maneuverability offered by midsize tennis rackets (85 to 95 square inches) and midplus tennis rackets (95 to 105 square inches). Older adults and those who lack strength and precise strokes may benefit from oversize tennis rackets (110+ square inches). Oversize tennis rackets can lead to sloppy strokes, and are therefore not recommended for junior players.

Tennis racket selection can be a daunting process. However, understanding the specifications discussed in this article, brand, racket weight, racket length, grip size, balance, and head size, will help simplify the tennis racket selection process.

When Buying Used Car Is Not A Good Idea

February 21, 2012

Looking for the cheapest car through buying used cars is a smart practice. However, when the buyer is truly saving and is on a tight budget, buying a used car should not be immediately decided upon and should take a lot of deliberation. This is to avoid throwing away your hard-earned money.

Therefore, for people who already know something about buying used cars but wish to know when not to buy them, here are some pointers that may help people in their decision-making:

1. Buyers should be wary of buying used cars from owners that do not have complete and pertinent documents.

This could mean a lot of negative things and the buyer is the only one who will be at the losing end. Documents are crucial especially if the car is second hand. It is the only solid guarantee that a buyer can get hold of when buying used cars.

If this is the case, then, the buyer might as well not pursue the deal.

2. Buyers should consider their budget

If the reason why the buyer is opting to purchase a used car is the budget, then it should be the same reason why the buyer should be careful and meticulous in choosing a used car.

Hence, if the car needs a lot of maintenance, repairs, and other modifications, it is best not to buy that used car.

3. If the buyer is not comfortable after test-driving the car, then, it is best not to buy it.

There are instances wherein some people tend to opt for used cars because of the model of the car being sold. It is their dream car and there is no other way they can purchase them but to buy them second hand.

However, if the buyer was not comfortable with the car after test-driving it, then, it would be better not to pursue the deal, even if it means the world to the buyer to have that car.

The bottom line is that buying used cars should never be the sole alternative to people who cannot afford to buy new ones. This means that people should value the process of choosing a used car like what they would do when they buy a new car.

After all, it is their money that will be put to risk that is why it is extremely important to consider all the factors in order to have the best buy ever.
